Tondu RFC is fully committed to placing player welfare above competitive considerations and will adhere to WRU concussion guidance through the following measures:
1. Immediate Removal from Play
Any player displaying signs, symptoms or behaviours consistent with concussion will be removed immediately from training or match play. No player suspected of concussion will be permitted to return on the same day.
2. “If in Doubt, Sit Them Out” Culture
Coaches, captains, volunteers and players will adopt a zero-tolerance approach to suspected head injuries, ensuring welfare takes precedence over performance or match results.
3. Medical Referral and Reporting
All suspected concussions will be recorded and the player advised to seek appropriate medical assessment. Parents or guardians will be informed immediately for junior players.
4. Education and Awareness
Tondu RFC will promote WRU concussion education among coaches, players, parents and volunteers to improve recognition of concussion symptoms and appropriate management.
5. Graduated Return to Play Compliance
No player will return to contact rugby until they have:
- Completed the WRU Graduated Return to Play process;
- Remained symptom-free throughout rehabilitation;
- Satisfied any medical clearance requirements; and
- Observed the minimum 21-day stand-down period applicable to grassroots rugby.
6. Welfare-First Decision Making
Club coaches and team management will support players throughout recovery and will not pressure any player to return before they are medically and physically ready.
7. Ongoing Monitoring
Players returning from concussion will be monitored closely during training and matches, with any recurrence of symptoms resulting in immediate withdrawal and further medical review.
Tondu RFC Player Welfare Statement
Tondu RFC recognises concussion as a serious brain injury and is committed to following all WRU concussion protocols. The club will operate under the principle of “If in doubt, sit them out”, ensuring that any player with a suspected concussion is removed from play, appropriately assessed, and only returns to rugby through the WRU Graduated Return to Play process. Player safety and long-term wellbeing will always take priority over participation and performance.
